The explorations are divided into the three themes of space, light and materials. Within each of those themes there are five topics.

Space

Light

Materials

Each topic contains

Curriculum links

At Key Stage 3 (11-14 year olds) these are included for Art & Design, Design & Technology, Geography, Mathematics and Science. At Key Stage 4 (14-16 year olds), curriculum links are only included for Mathematics and Science as these subjects have statutory programmes of study (ones all students must study by law), whereas those for Art & Design, Design & Technology and Geography vary depending on which GCSE awarding body the school follows (eg Edexcel, AQA and OCR).

Key words

Some terms are very useful for describing architectural phenomena but they can be difficult to explain. At the start of each topic there is a list of useful definitions for any terms used in the following activities that may require further explanation.

The Activity

Step-by-step guidance in how to run explorations into the themes:

Preparation: This includes any planning that needs to be done before the session. For example some of the activities will use the whole building, rather than just one space, and so preparation needs to be taken in to account for moving the group around the building.

Create a worksheet: in some instances it may be helpful to make a simple worksheet or draw a diagram before the exploration – sometimes sample worksheet tables or diagrams are included and can be copied or adapted.

Materials: Any equipment that will be required.
